The Innocent Rebel follows four siblings through the first year of the American Revolutionary War from the perspective of Mercy Young who's almost 13 years old and convinced she’s the only reason her brothers will grow up civilized.

On April 19th, 1775, their world is turned upside down when the redcoats attack their home in Lexington and their father is captured and sent to a prison ship. Unwilling to stay behind while her 14-year-old brother, Benjamin, goes looking for him, they sneak out of town together with their younger brothers, Abraham and David.

The Youngs flew to work and, within minutes, had gathered at Henry’s flatbed wagon. As Henry finished lashing his team, the children piled their
supplies behind the buckboard.

“Mercy, Ben, I may need your help with those wounded boys. Why don’t you hop up here with me?”

They did as they were told. Abigail attempted to protest, but Henry’s expression ended the conversation.

“Let’s go, boys,” he said with a clap of the reigns.
